Holidays are about family, festivities and fun, but if you’re traveling with children, things don’t always go as smoothly as you would like.  The preparation alone is often overwhelming!  Whether you’re driving a long distance, or flying to grandma’s house, you’re bound to run into some seasonal chaos and disruptions.  To help you enjoy the ride, we’ve put together some essential travel tips to keep the whole family happy.  Bon voyage!

-Preparation is critical.  Try to pack a little each day leading up to the trip instead of doing everything last minute.  Be sure each child has his or her own bag to stay organized and foster responsibility.  Plus you won’t be searching through one large bag looking for everyone’s things.   Personalized luggage and luggage tags will keep all your ducks in a row.

-Surprise Them:  Bring a few small new toys or games the size of stocking stuffers, and give them out at intervals during the trip as incentive for good behavior.  For ideas, click HERE

-Buy small healthy snacks for the road or plane, and don’t include anything with sugar.  Try veggie sticks, pita bread, mini sandwiches, nuts and sliced apples.  On the plane, resist the urge to eat sweets and stay away from caffeine, carbs, juices and dessert.  Make sure everyone stays hydrated with their own water bottle.

-Be sure to bring your child’s favorite stuffed animal and blanket

-Bring mini versions of popular games, such as Battleship, Legos, coloring books, magnet stickers and a notebook for Tic Tac Toe or Hangman

-Bring some new books to read to your child.  Have your children help to choose the book before the trip so it will be something they are interested in.

-Electronics:  It’s okay to bring the iPads, but regulate usage during the trip.  If you’re in the car, say they can watch for 30 minutes, then shut them off and have a family game of I Spy, family sing-along or license plate games for the next 30 minutes.  If you are on the plane, let them watch one show or movie, then shut it off and read a book, or play a game.

-Download a family-centric podcast, like Stories Podcast, created by Dan Hinds. “We offer a mix of original stories and adaptations of classic stories read storybook style with voices for characters and songs,” says Hinds. The podcast is a top “family” pick on iTunes.

-Sleep management:  If you are traveling a long distance, be sure to insist on a nap during the trip. Bring our Hootie on the plane to help kids fall asleep.  Let your children watch a video only if they agree to take a nap right afterward.  When you arrive, have something light to eat and try a family nap after lunch to get back on schedule.  The worst thing to do is let your child stay up way past his bedtime with no nap.  It will negatively affect their mood and schedule for the next two days.  If you have a late-night flight or red-eye, give your children a nap six hours before you leave for the airport, then put them to sleep on the plane an hour after take-off.
