According to Rhoda Kellogg, a psychologist, scholar and child educator who collected and studied children’s art over the course of her lifetime, children all go through similar stages of drawing. They are stimulated to each new level because of discoveries they make about their OWN drawings, NOT by observing the world around them. Interesting!
From 1948 to 1981, Kellogg collected several-million drawings made by children, ages two through six, as they scribbled to teach themselves how to draw. Kellogg’s thesis was that universal patterns and developmental stages can be found in a study of children’s art.
Here are those Kellogg’s famous key stages:
1. A child scribbles for the pure fun of it.
2. The child gains enough control to produce shapes that have occurred in random scribbles
3. Shapes are combined; lines begin to cross, breaking the design into “mandalas.”
4. Sun appears as an outgrowth of mandala drawings.
5. The sun acquires some characteristics of a human.
6. The sun begins to evolve into a human.
7. Rays give way to “legs.”
8. More body parts appear.
9. The older child delights in adding detail to humans.

How to Talk to Kids About Their Art
Jean Van’t Hul, from The Artful Parent, says it’s important how parents talk to their children about their artwork. What you say or don’t say may discourage them from being creative, so keep these tips in mind:
DO
-ASK them to tell you about their artwork
-COMMENT on the lines or colors, etc. that they are using (I see that you are making lots of purple dots. I like how the red paint is mixing with the yellow paint here.)
-ACKNOWLEDGE how hard (carefully, enthusiastically, long) they worked on their artwork
DON’T
-Ask, “What is that?”
-Say an automatic “That’s pretty,cool, or beautiful” before you ask them to explain their art first
