From coloring eggs, decorating Easter baskets and planning scavenger hunts, activities for children are always a cherished part of the holy season.  Baking with the little ones is a fabulous way to make memories and sparks a lifelong love of the kitchen.  It’s also a good time to teach a few lessons along the way.  Besides feasting on sweet treats, they learn valuable skills and practice math and reading without even realizing it.  Using measuring cups and spoons, reading the recipe, mixing colors, and rolling out dough are both fun and educational.

Here are some simple tips for planning a fun afternoon of decorating Easter cookies.

–Buy cookie cutters in Easter or spring shapes, such as bunnies, chicks, or flowers.

Set out all your favorite colorful Easter candies:  Peeps, mini eggs, jellybeans, gumdrops, bunnies, etc.

Make your favorite sugar cookie recipe, or buy the prepared version in the frozen-food section of the supermarket.

-Purchase a few frosting pens with different attachable tips

-Use disposable pastry bags for easy clean up, or use Ziploc bags and cut a tiny corner off to make a pastry bag.  Let the kids draw a design or their initials on a cookie.

-Food coloring comes in liquid, paste and gel forms.  Gel and paste will give your frosting a bolder color.   Most supermarkets carry liquid food coloring in the spice aisle.  Use food coloring to teach kids about colors.  If you’re making orange, let them add the yellow and red coloring drops to the bowl so they can learn how colors are formed.

Frost the tops of the cookies to create the nest upon which the decorations will sit.

-Decorate the cookies with the sweets, or design with tinted glaze or decorator’s gel.  Allow to dry.

Use the decorated cookies as a pretty centerpiece on a simple dessert platter. The kids will be so proud of their work!
